when remarque writes: it is not against men we fling our bombs, who does he say the men are fighting?

Paul remarks that they are not fighting aganst a mortal enemy:they are simply fighting Death. Death is personified as their real enemy. They "fling bombs" only to survive, to live another day. They are not so concerned with the enemy soldiers: they just want to live.
