Himmelstoss is their basic training commander. He is cruel and relentless, "drilling them in exercises that seem unnecessarily repetitive, such as the "stand up--fall down." He makes them clean their barracks with a toothbrush. He especially humiliates Tjaden by putting him under the bunk of another bedwetter. They do admit, however, that Himmelstoss had taught them some valuable lessons to be used in the front.
