How Appropriate is the ending of the story?

Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front is an anti-war novel. Paul's death at the end of the novel directly engages the reader in the reality of war..... the reality of death. Over sixteen million people died as a result of this war. Paul's death serves to make us angry...... why not a happy ending? Thus, Remarque's point is driven home.
