The boys quickly found that there was no glory in warfare. The only glory they felt was surviving another day. The early death of Kemmerich showed the brutal realities of war. Amputated and in intense pain, Kemmerich's life drains away unceremoniously. In the beginning of the novel only 80 of 150 men return from battle. Through Paul's eyes we see there is nothing but blood, guts, death and sorrow; their teacher had lied to them.
