Paul stares into the eyes of a Frenchman on the ground and eventually throws a grenade at him. Paul feels haunted by this. He later looks through the dead man's pockets and is moved by the pictures of his family. Paul feels he has more in common with the dead French soldier than he has with people back home in Germany.
