What happens when Paul Baumer can come home on leave?

Paul feels like a visitor in his own home town. Paul no longer relates to the people he grew up with. Many people in the town know nothing about the realities of war and share the same propaganda that Kantorek used to teach them. Paul also visits his family which is very sad. His mother is dying of cancer and his father can't afford even basic treatment to keep her comfortable.
