Paul was tired of the people he encountered in his village. Civilians seemed to know very little about what was actually going on in the war. They had opinions and speculations that had little to do with the reality and daily horrors of war. Paul also didn't want to be paraded around like some sort of trophy son amongst the neighbors of the village.
