Why does Paul state that they dare not remember farther back than the barracks?

The barracks meant a simpler time where mindless drills and good conversation structured their day. Paul says remembering before the barracks would involve their civilian pre-war lives. They still had their innocence then. They do not want to think about all that they lost.
