All Quiet on the Western Front, as a title, explains the ultimate silence of the soldiers. The silence speaks to death, a death that came on a day so remarkable that there was nothing to report.... not even a skirmish.
He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front.
He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.
All Quiet on the Western Front
it's because the 1st world war was a static warfare. considering you're in germany, the war took place at the west front but the war front never changed. the original title "im westen nichts neues" literally translates to "nothing new in the west", meaning that the front still hasn't changed and there's no outcome in sight. it was just an endless battle. source: am austrian
