How does Rodriguez escalate to petty crime

Luis' gang life starts small. His gang consists of himself and three other friends. Unfortunately, the expectations to merge with the larger gangs are difficult if not impossible to say no to, and before they know it.... the boys become a part of one of the major gangs where they are expected to perform crimes that rise above the definition of "petty".
