Victorians didn't laugh too much at themselves. Marriage, gender roles and sexuality were heavily regulated to a narrow understanding that was written in stone. Oscar Wilde loved to deconstruct the Victorian psyche. Check out the link below for an excellent post by another GradeSaver editor.
