Birling is Priestly's representaive of capitalism. He is shown as a pompous snob, shallow, and and dishonorable. Priestly, is of course, a proponent of socialism. He makes fun of Birling's irrational belief that a war will not occur and capitalizes on the fact that it does. He portrays socialism as the victor, the good, and capitalism as the evil, which has in his story been vanquished. Capitalism takes advantage of the "little" guy, and it is obvious that Priestly considers people like Birling despicable, all while embracing the labor movement.
