Inspector Goole is sharp and subtle. He is able to inhabit the conscience of the other characters without appearing to have an agenda. Priestley leaves the precise nature of his character ambiguous, and it can be interpreted in various ways. Characters tend to confess deeper moral conflicts to him rather than simply answer questions
