How does the play explore the issue of time and past's impact on the present?

Time is a major theme in the play. Priestly was immensely interested in Dunne’s theory of time, which theorized that the past was still present, and that time was not linear. In the play's final scene, we wonder if the play has gone back in time? How did the Inspector know what hadn't yet happened?
