How should Gerald ‘break off’ from telling his story?

I would advise Gerald to tell his story honestly. To lie will only alienate Sheila, who for all intents and purposes has agreed to marry him, even though she knows he was involved with another woman the summer before. Dishonesty, will only cause her more consternation and open old wounds.
