An Inspector Calls
What do you think the Inspector set out to achieve? How successful do you think he was?
The Inspector does elicit self-reflection from the Birling family. Near the end ogf the play, the Inspector notes, "We do not live alone....we are members of one body.” The Birlings, of course, initially do not think at all about how they might have affected Eva Smith, but they are forced to confront their likely responsibility over the course of the play.
