There is no time has passed between acts. Eric stands looking at the assembled company as before. Before he starts his interrogation, Eric asks for a drink—a request to which the Inspector agrees—and which Birling denies. Eric’s heavy drinking is now no secret, and the Inspector explains to Birling that Eric “needs a drink now just to see him through.”The Inspector, more quickly than before, sets about interrogating Eric. This creats a mood of great tension and anxiety.
