Who was the inspector?

Whether or not the Inspector was a real man or supernatural being is never identified in the text. What we do know, is that the Inspector was dressed professionally, in his fifties, and a man is discernment. He goes to the Birling home with a purpose, and never loses sight of his mission...... exposure and accountablility.
