Why did Gerald cheat on Shelia in the first place if she was engaged?

Gerald and Sheila were not engaged during the time in question. The play opens during the celebration of their engagement. Gerald was seeing someone else (Eva) the summer before.

They were not engaged and were you could say "speaking" during that time. Sheila was commited however Gerald was not which was very common at the time and not frowned upon for men.
