The animals are rewarded for their hard work in October, when Napoleon instates “strictly voluntary” labor on Sundays. Note, the animals may choose not to work, but if they don't, they will have their rations reduced by half.
When the pigs move into the farmhouse, and Clover discovers that the pigs have taken to sleeping in beds, she tries to read the Seven Commandments on the barn wall but cannot. Muriel is able to read it for her, and they see that the resolution has been changed to: “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets” (79). Squealer, on the other hand, denies that there was ever a rule against beds—only sheets, and he once again justifies the pigs’ actions by threatening Mr. Jones’s return.
