Orwell makes the connection between fear tactics and economic strategy very clear in Chapter VI. Napoleon moves directly from accusing Snowball of destroying the windmill to urging the animals, “Forward, comrades! Long live the windmill! Long live Animal Farm” (83). Napoleon remains a leader the animals are willing to follow—they cannot see another choice, anyway, especially with Mr. Jones and Snowball cast as enemies—but the legitimacy of Napoleon’s authority is becoming more and more suspect to the reader. Squealer serves the function of an articulate mouthpiece for Napoleon. Squealer can twist words ans spin meanings to support whatever Napoleon wants.
