The old government was a monarchy, ruled by Tsar Nicholas. Then the revolution occurred in 1917 and the Tsar was murdered. Initially Lenin took over using some of the concepts of Karl Marx' ideas from The Communist Manifesto. After Lenin's death, Stalin and Trotsky thought they would rule together, until Stalin ran Trotsky out of the country to Mexico. Stalin took over as a tyrant and ruled with an iron fist. He created programs that were supposed to work, but they did nothing but hurt the people. Part of his rule was characterized by true destruction of his own people, many killed.
