I think the true meaning of Animal Farm was initially a socialist utopia for animals. Farmer Jones was hard on his animals. Farmer Jones symbolized the capitalist elite who made profits off of the backs of poor workers. Farmer Jones did this off his animals. Old major had a vision. It was a vision of a socialist paradise where each animal worked for the collective success of the whole farm. The official animal slogan was, "All men are enemies. All animals are comrades."

That was the initial meaning of animal farm. Unfortunately, like humans, some animals began to feel better than others, "FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BAD". Thus Animal Farm had come to mean a broken utopia where power was there for the strongest most manipulative of animals at the expense of weaker ones. Animal Farm, the novel, becomes an allegory for human nature and our inability to truly be equal.
