Why was reading Ben Hur in goemetry class wrong? What had changed in the relationship between Gilbert and Anne?

Anne thinks she was supposed to be doing geometry rather than reading Ben Hur. It is looking like there is a little attraction between Gilbert and Anne. She feels badly about snubbing him at the river.
