The society is a dystopian world in which no individual is allowed to think for him/herself - there is only the collective mind and thus the use of all plural pronouns. It is a society in which every part of one's life - from birth to death - is controlled by the government. One does not go to school unless the government thinks one should; one's job is not determined by one's abilities but rather by the government's feeling about how to keep a particular person in his/her place. For me the lack of individuality would be a complete "turn off"; however, we might not feel that way if we had been raised in that society.
