Identify the modern day conveniences being referenced as "wagons which moved without horses," and "lights which burned without flame." Why do you think the names we use are no longer in use?

Those modern conveniences were automobiles and light bulbs or electricity. These things are no longer in use because they promote independence and autonomy, encourage thought and inspire creativity. All of these things are prohibited in society. The Councils are in complete control. Independent thought, knowledge, and creativity are a threat to that control.
