Antigone
What is the relantionship between oikos and polis in Antigone?
Oikos = home, polis = city
Oikos = home, polis = city
In this case, the "home" referred to combines the rights of women which are put down in this play and in this time period. Polis refers to the city and the rules which are set in place by the government. Creon equates himself with the city, while Antigone equates herself with the home. Both, in their hubris, believe they are right and do what they do because the conflict is real for them. Creon does not want his wishes defied; Antigone wants to honor tradition and the gods and do what is right as the sister of the dead Polyneices.
