Were are you going ? were have you been ? by Joyce Carol Oates
Were are you going ? were have you been ? by Joyce Carol Oates
The opening sentence really describes Connie's relationship with her mother, "Stop gawking at yourself," she tells her. "You think you're so pretty?" Implicit in mother's tone is the disappointment of her aging looks and harsh envy of her own daughters burgeoning looks. Her father was absent much of the time, he "was away at work most of the time and when he came home he wanted supper and he read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed." He is withdrawn from much of his family. Connie is compared with her sister June who is "plain and steady" instead of the emotional Connie.
