I think their lives were shaped by their circumstances. Working hard was a necessity for survival. The parents instilled a strong work ethic in all their children. THey had nothing yet survived. They also had the crowning glory of Buddy's success. Although Buddy had the luxury of attending school, while the others toiled, he carried the weight of his family's hopes and dreams.
