I read this back in high school so I had to look at it again. I think Twain obviously was manipulating us by keeping the major information out of the story. I knew she wasn't alive, the way Twain describes this guy pointed to mental problems. There is to much build up to this girl's return and this fellow, her husband, a bit too animated to be "normal".
