The Jews do not really consider that anything bad could happen to them, and even though Eliezer asks his father to emigrate to Palestine, his father does not want to start a new life elsewhere.

Had he known what was to come, I don't think he would have made the decision he made, but no one could have guessed what the future would hold, and home is a hard thing to give up. I can't judge that type of decision, that's something no one could possibly understand unless they've lived through it.
