Samuel seems happy with his life in America. He has a family, even grandchildren, and other than sending his parents money really has no relationship with them at all. He cannot believe that his parents haven't used the money he sent them, and eve goes so far as to look for things they could have done with it. He's shocked by his parent's life and cannot believe they're happy with what they have when they could have had more.
