Can you please explain the chain of events that may have occurred if a meteorite collided with Earth, causing the extinction of many plants and animals.

The impact of the meteor with the earth would have created large quantities of dust, which would have blocked sunlight. This lack of sunlight would have caused plant life to die because they couldn't turn sunlight into food. Lack of plants would have caused herbivores to die of starvation, and in turn, lack of herbivores would have caused the same fate for large carnivores.
