The way the mental hospital is portrayed in the movie might symbolize insanity itself. Ironically, it is not so much that only the patients are insane. Rather, it is that the system itself is insane. This is because it is impossible to question the system without appearing insane, and at the same time it is insane to believe that the system is sane.
