why does mama agree to marry luis?

She agrees to marry him in order to give herself (and Eperanza) a chance to prepare things for their escape. They need to prepare to leave Mexico without arousing suspicion. By agreeing to marry Luis, she buys some time and even gets him to loan her a wagon!
