In the movie Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin) what is the meaning of the scene between the inmate and the minister's wife

This scene is meant to be a subtle (not really) jab at organized religion. He's making fun of the minister, who tries to bring comfort to the inmates, but even more so his upity wife who believes herself to be better than those around her and acts in a condescending manner.
