Novel Indian Horse- the pros/advantages of using the first person voice in character develpment

I am recently busy doing my presentation about the novel of India Horse by Richard Wagamese. Since its writing style is first person voice, I want to know how the use of this style help to build the character of Saul more deeply and effectively, and how can it make the story more reliable/believable and other positive effects......
