Sophie is a girl about David’s age that he meets playing on the bank. She is described as having “a small face, sunburned, and clustered about in dark curls.”

Sophie, is a girl David meets and befriends. She was born with an extra toe on each foot. When her secret is discovered by another boy in the district, Sophie and her family are forced to flee.
Her family flees because the Definition of Man says, "And each leg shall be jointed twice and shall have one foot and each foot 5 toes. And any creature that shall seem to be human, but is not formed thus, is not human. It is a blasphemy against the true image of God, and hateful in the sight of God."
