Aristotle observes that people lacking temperance tend to indulge their sensitive appetites beyond what is “natural”. These sorts of people he calls “belly gods”, since they make an idol out of their appetites. Aristotle remarks that belly gods are of “slavish character” because they cannot control their own appetites.
