There are clear differences between the language used to both describe and embody both the white characters and the black characters. In terms of the former, the language of both narration and dialogue is defined by what might be described as traditionally western, or European, grammar and syntax. Sentence structure is formal; vocabulary is more intellectual, more grammatically “correct,” and more to the point. The African author makes a clear effort to use language to define the white characters (e.g. Winterbottom, Clarke, Wright) as having a clear sense of themselves as superior in virtually every way – more entitled, more intelligent, more accomplished, more “civilized” than the black characters.
