Melodrama is basically a plot meant to appeal to the emotions. There is often exhilleration, pathos, guilt, greed....As you like it certainly does appeal the the emotional mind.  There is the conflict between Orlando and his older brother Oliver, and there is the usurpation of the ducal throne by Duke Frederick from his brother Duke Senior. Emotions of love, loyalty, and anger all work overtime when the cast enters the pastoral Forest of Ardenne.
