Why is Bartleby compared to Jesus?
Bartleby the Scrivner is in itself a parable. Bartleby himself epitomizes a conflict between two radically different spiritual personalities. The two sides of Bartleby are compelled to participate in the dialectics of faith and doubt, both of which gradually unveil the frontiers of eternity they live in. Bartleby gives into death because of his perception of the Christian faith. In Bartleby's Christianity, Christ has died but not risen; he therefore accepts that end himself.
