Because of Bartleby's profession, the story's narrator would have to be someone who'd spent enough time around Bartleby to even compose his story. Also, the lawyer is the one person who has been able to discover a clue about Bartleby's past: a rumor that he'd once worked in the Dead Letter office before being fired. As a lawyer, he also has more ways of gathering information that might lead to answering questions about Bartleby; the main question being; what drove him to the actions that left him buried in a prison yard.
