Sethe remembers her mother in fragments. She remembers a woman named Nan telling her, as a small child, that her mother, "Threw them all away but her." Sethe remembers being "unimpressed" at this explanation but also angry. I think Sethe was unable to really understand and process this painful past and reconcile it with her present.
