What does the tobacco tin symbolize?

The tobacco tin symbolizes Paul's heart. The tin is the place he hides away his memories.... memories too painful to carry with him, and the emotions that went with them. This is also Paul's way of communicating his lack of heart or emotion..... he became hardened to survive.
