Morrison uses Garner and his brother-in-law Schoolteacher to compare and contrast the difference in slaveowners and their treatment of slaves. Garner is shed in a more positive light than his brother-in-law because he was said to have been generous toward his slaves (later proven to be a sham). Schoolteacher was cruel and abusive from the get go...... he was evil.

Sahar- The purpose here was to characterize the slaveowners. Garner was an example of what Morrison considered a "generous" owner. Schoolteacher was an abusive, tyranical owner. If you need to discuss slave ownership in your homework, those opinions need to come from YOU.
