Explain the dragon's message: "the sins of the fathers" ?
In the context of religion, the sins of the fathers are passed down from one generation to the next. In terms of the dragon, the sins are never forgotten and this becomes literal. Something has been stolen, and the dragon will have his revenge regardless.
