Yes Beowulf does want fame through immortality. I think the risks he takes battling Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon, all speaks to his need for fame. The songs and legends they speak of in Mead Hall represent this bravado. Christian ideas on immortality are focused on Heaven and God rather than personal exploits.
