how was Beowulf a hero in chapter one

Beowulf is heroic in that he suspects that this dragon will be the end of him, but decides to confront it nevertheless. Even when his men, all of whom are younger than he is (this is late in his reign), he perseveres and brings that dragon down, dying in the process.
