Grendel feels that he is completely outside the company of humans and that he will never be accepted. He is not allowed to enjoy the camaraderie of Hrothgar and his court and so wants to get back at these men. He is a creature created by the Anglo-Saxons who were, after all, a pagan people and these creators believed in such concepts at Wyrd, the fate that comes from the "gods." Any Christianity that shows up in this story comes from the fact that though the story came from pagans, they were first written down by Christian monks who inserted their Christian beliefs in the pagan story.
